In 1960, the German designer Dieter Rams designed the 606 Universal Shelving System, which was produced and retailed by the internationally renowned furniture company Vitsœ. Designed to be timeless and built to last, this shelving system has endured the test of time and now celebrates 50 years of continuous production.

To mark this milestone, Vitsœ’s 60s 606 is 50 exhibition, which debuted in London, is opening at the New York Vitsœ Store on Bond Street next week (2 - 28 May). It includes rare, early examples of shelving units juxtaposed with the shelving systems of today to show both the similarities and evolution of this innovative design.

Dieter Rams, initially an architect, began working for electronics manufacturer Braun in 1955 and went on to become one of the most influential product designers of the 20th century. His 10 principles of good design have inspired the likes of Apple's Jonathan Ive and remain relevant to designers, who should ensure products are: innovative, aesthetic, useful, understandable, unobtrusive, honest, thorough down to the last detail, long lasting and environmentally friendly. Finally, good design is as little design as possible, concentrating on the essential aspects.

Produced as a 'kit of parts', the 606 Universal Shelving System reflects Dieter Rams’s principles. You can start small with just one shelf, add to it, rearrange and take it with you when you move. Simple and functional, it is this ability to evolve that has made the 606 range as popular today as it was 50 years ago.
