Tomi Ungerer: illustrator and individual extraordinaire
Highlights from two books by the award-winning illustrator
If you aren't already familiar with Little Nicholas (Le Petit Nicolas), there has never been a better time to become acquainted with the child star of René Goscinny and Jean-Jacques Sempé's 1950s French series. Told in the first person by Nicholas himself, the works are populated by friends and family fleshed out by descriptions such as (of Nicholas' best friend Alceste) "he's fat and he eats all the time."
Considered a classic in its original form, the last few years have been a busy time for Sempé's protagonist. Republished in English by Phaidon in 2005, the original volume, Le Petit Nicolas, has since been followed by four new titles (also by Goscinny and Sempé) including Nicholas on Holiday and Nicholas and the Gang. For followers of page and screen, in 2009 he was also brought to life in Le Petit Nicolas by expert animation design duo Kuntzel & Deygas.
