Founded in 1947 by Herbert Read as a place to enable artistic creativity, the ICA has grown into a multi-disciplinary art centre with two galleries, two cinemas, a theatre, reading room, bookshop and café. However whilst the general public’s hunger for contemporary art is growing, the ICA is mired in internal struggle and possibly falling into the classic trap that big institutions sometimes do – is it now too big to move with the times?
Will Gompertz mulls over the future of the ICA and life after the departure of its creative director, Ekow Eshun.
