The Serpentine's Pavilions
Helen Thomas reflects on ten years of the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion programme
Swiss architect Peter Zumthor has been announced as the next architect invited to create a summer pavilion for the Serpentine Gallery in London. Following in the wake of French architect Jean Nouvel, whose pavilion is set to come down this weekend, Zumthor's work will be erected in Hyde Park next summer.
Inaugurated in 2000, the Serpentine Gallery Summer Pavilion is now an established platform for international architectural experimentation. Architects are offered the chance to create a pavilion by invitation only and must not have completed any structures in the UK at the time of their appointment.
Zumthor, who won the Pritzker Prize in 2009, is currently working on a holiday home near Chivelstone for Alain de Botton’s venture, Living Architecture, which is not due to finish until late 2011.
