 Unlike Magnum photojournalist Steve McCurry you’ll probably never end up ‘shooting’ others while they’re trying to shoot at you. However, there will be times when a situation you’re photographing has its own particular stresses - a best friend’s wedding perhaps, or a once-in-a-blue-moon family gathering.

The old journalistic interview technique is always useful to bear in mind: prepare, then prepare again, then prepare a bit more. You could, for instance, get in the habit of setting yourself a ten-shot, or ten-second time limit when practising your photos in the run up to a big event. On the day however, events can still sometimes overtake you and you might still find yourself crossing your fingers and hitting the 'burst' button. McCurry, as usual, has some better advice.
