Olivier Père selected Raya Martin as one of the best emerging film directors working today and chose the film Maicling pelicula nañg ysañg Indio Nacional (A Short Film About the Indio Nacional) as an example that best represents his work.

Maicling pelicula nañg ysañg Indio Nacional (A Short Film About the Indio Nacional) (2005):
Set in the 1890s against the backdrop of the brewing revolution between the Philippines and Spain is a collection of silent-cinema-inspired tales revolving around an “indio,” the common man during the colonial times. The film reveals different situations of a people previously excluded from historical considerations and how their circumstances revolve around birth, war, and death.

"Among the many new Filipino directors, Raya Martin stands out for his youth, prolific output, and, above all, his wildly ambitious artistic and cinematographic projects."
Olivier Pére, Artistic Director, Locarno Film Festival
