Tripping the light fantastic

Art and design practice UVA has built an enviable reputation for innovation over the last few years with its work appearing in institutions as far afield as London, New York, Beijing, Melbourne and Mumbai and onstage with the likes of U2, Massive Attack and Jay-Z.

Now the practice has designed the identity for this year's onedotzero_adventures in motion festival at the BFI on London's Southbank. The festival, which showcases short films, animation, music videos, digital art and everything in between has, in the past, helped launch the careers of producer and actor Spike Jonze, music video director Jonathan Glazer and architectural lighting designer Jason Bruges.

UVA has created an inventive trailer sequence for the festival (watch it below). Wanting to make the elements of the motion identity entirely from light, UVA used laser technology with typographical sequences reflecting the ephemeral nature of their installation work.

As well as the festival trailer, UVA also has a project of its own on show at the BFI. It's called Horizon and is designed to play with viewers' perceptions of where their horizon lies. "It artificially provides the visitor with a personal horizon," UVA say. "Through a narrow slit, data is projected onto the visitor's retina."

UVA has previously created digital installations for Virgin Media and Yoji Yamamoto's Y-3 as well as helping create the visual effects for a number of touring bands. In September last year UVA's Matt Clark went on an expedition to the arctic which resulted in the National Maritime Museum's current exhibition High Arctic (click the link for all the info), on show until January 2012.
