Unlike other honours, Building Design's Architect of the Year Awards evaluate a whole body of work in a particular sector. The 2010 awards spanned 12 categories, from Healthcare and Hotel & Leisure (won by Orms Architecture Design and Maccreanor Lavington respectively), to the hotly-contested Housing Category (which went to Peter Barber Architects, whose work includes the Spring Gardens homeless facility in Lewisham and Villiers Road Studios in Brent).

The overall prize for the architect of the year was presented to DSDHA, which also bagged the Education Architect of the Year for its work at Stirling Prize-shortlisted Christ’s College in Guildford and the neighbouring Pond Meadow Special Needs School.

The prestigious Young Architect of the Year Award (YAYA) went to Serie Architects’ Kapil Guta and Chris Lee, who follow in the footsteps of Nord, which has gone onto to build the 2012 Olympic park, and Carmody Groake which last year realised the memorial to the victims of the 7/7 bombings.
